The Standard Poodle is the largest Poodle variety and was developed as a water retriever, probably in Germany. Under the show-ring clips is a square, athletic dog with long legs, a dense curly coat and a keen, people-focused mind. The AKC places the breed in the Non-Sporting Group, but most Standards are happier working than lounging.
The low-shedding coat grows continuously, so it needs brushing several times a week and a professional clip every six to eight weeks. Low-shedding isn't allergy-proof, though, since no dog is. In Bowling Green, that coat is worth planning around, with shorter clips for humid summers and a good brush-out after muddy spring walks. Standards vary, so spend time with the dog in front of you.
