The Great Pyrenees began as a livestock guardian in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain, where big white dogs stayed with the flock and watched for wolves and bears. Today's Pyr is a giant dog, usually 85 to 120 pounds, with a thick white double coat that may carry gray, tan or reddish-brown markings.
Most are gentle and deeply attached to their people, but they were bred to think for themselves, so they can be slow to obey, protective of their space and inclined to wander. In Bowling Green, where dogs must be leashed off their own property, that means a solid fence and a leash on walks. Plan on weekly brushing and heavy seasonal shedding. Pyrs and Pyr mixes turn up often in shelters.
