Cattle Dog is a shelter label more than a single breed. Most often it means an Australian Cattle Dog, the Blue or Red Heeler, or a mix with one, though Texas Heelers and crosses with Border Collies or Labs turn up under the same name. The Australian Cattle Dog was developed in nineteenth-century Australia from collie-type herders and dingoes to drive cattle by nipping at their heels.
Expect a medium, muscular dog of roughly 30 to 50 pounds with a short double coat, plenty of stamina and a sharp, independent mind. Many bond closely with one household, stay reserved with strangers and want a job to do. Mixes vary in size, coat and energy, so treat the label as a starting point and watch how the dog actually behaves.
