Border Collies came from the hills along the Anglo-Scottish border, where shepherds wanted a dog that could gather sheep with speed, focus and very little instruction. They're medium-sized, usually 30 to 55 pounds, with a smooth or rough double coat in black and white or many other colors. Brushing a few times a week keeps shedding manageable, and it picks up in spring and fall.
Many are quick, eager learners that thrive at agility, obedience and trick training, and many bond closely with their families. In Bowling Green, that means planning for training, a fenced yard or a reliable leash routine, and mental work on days the weather keeps you inside. Dogs vary, and a Border Collie's energy and sensitivity depend on age, history and personality as much as breed.
