The Belgian Shepherd is one breed with four coat types: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. The American Kennel Club registers them separately and calls the Groenendael the Belgian Sheepdog. They were sorted out of Belgian herding stock in the 1890s and later became police, military and sport dogs. Most weigh 40 to 75 pounds and have a square, elegant build.
Belgians are watchful, devoted and happiest with a task. They usually bond closely with their family, can be reserved with strangers, and need daily exercise plus training to stay balanced. Many dogs listed as Belgian Shepherds are Malinois or Malinois mixes, so coat, energy and intensity vary from dog to dog. Expect heavy shedding twice a year.
