The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle sizes and the closest to the breed's original job as a water retriever, probably in Germany. The elaborate show clip began as practical trimming for swimming. Underneath is a square, athletic dog, usually 18 to 24 inches tall and 40 to 70 pounds, in solid colors from black and white to apricot and silver.
Standards are often clever, sensitive and playful well into adulthood, and they tend to bond closely with their people. They suit households that enjoy training and shared activity. The low-shedding coat keeps growing, so expect professional grooming every month or two plus brushing at home. Dogs vary, so a particular Standard may be calmer or more energetic than the description.
