Husky is a catch-all name for northern sled dogs. In shelters it most often means a Siberian Husky or a Siberian mix, though Alaskan huskies, a mixed racing type, and dogs with some Malamute in them turn up too. Most weigh roughly 35 to 70 pounds and share erect ears, a thick double coat, a brush tail and sometimes blue or mismatched eyes.
Huskies are usually friendly, playful and vocal, but also independent, with a strong chase instinct and a talent for digging and escaping. They need serious daily exercise, a secure fence and patience with heavy shedding. With four real seasons in Overland Park, that thick coat is an asset in January and a challenge in July, and each dog's needs depend on its mix and age.
