The Basset Hound began as a French hunting hound that trailed rabbits and hares on foot, slow enough for hunters to follow without horses. The heavier modern type later developed in Britain. Bassets are long and low, with velvety ears, loose wrinkled skin and heavy bone. Most adults weigh 40 to 65 pounds and stand 11 to 15 inches tall. The short, smooth coat sheds moderately all year.
At home, Bassets are usually gentle, social pack hounds that get along with children and other dogs. They can also be stubborn, and many bay when bored or excited. In Muncie, that means planning for steady walks, a fenced yard or a firm grip on the leash, regular ear cleaning, nail trims and careful portions. Each dog varies with history and socialization.
