The Appenzell Mountain Dog, or Appenzeller Sennenhund, is one of four tricolor Swiss mountain dog breeds. It comes from the Appenzell region of northeast Switzerland, where it drove cattle, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. Medium-sized at roughly 48 to 70 pounds, it has a short, dense double coat in black or brown with white and rust markings, and a tail curled over its back.
Appenzellers are usually lively, alert and quick to bark, and many are reserved with strangers while devoted to their own people. In Indianapolis, that means plenty of walking, training and a plan for neighbors who hear every doorbell. Dogs vary, but the breed was built to work all day, so an active household with some dog experience tends to be the best match.
