Anatolian Shepherds come from the plateau of central Turkey, where flock-guarding dogs of this type have protected sheep and goats from predators for thousands of years. They live with the flock and decide for themselves when to step in. Adults are big and rangy, often 80 to 150 pounds, with a short to rough coat, a thick undercoat and, on many fawn dogs, a dark mask, though other colors occur.
In a city like Indianapolis, that background shows up in everyday ways. Most are calm and loyal with their household but wary of visitors, and many bark at night or test fences. They mature slowly, usually over two to three years, and respond best to patient, consistent training. Dogs vary, so spend time getting to know the one you're considering.
