The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle sizes and the closest to the breed's roots as a water retriever, most likely in Germany. Under the show clip is a square, athletic dog, usually 40 to 70 pounds, with a dense curly coat that sheds very little and comes in solid colors from black and white to apricot and silver.
Standards are clever, sensitive and playful well into adulthood. They bond closely and learn fast, though some are reserved with strangers and dislike harsh handling. The coat keeps growing, so plan on professional grooming every month or two plus brushing at home. In Fort Wayne, where winters mean slush and road salt, that coat also needs a wipe-down after salty or muddy walks.
