Shepherd is a type of dog rather than one breed. On adoption listings it usually means a German Shepherd or a German Shepherd mix, though Australian Shepherds, Belgian and Dutch Shepherds, English Shepherds and crosses with Labs or Huskies carry the label too. What they share is ancestry in herding and flock-guarding work.
Most are medium to large, athletic and smart, with a thick shedding coat and a strong wish to stay near their people. Many are loyal and quick to learn, and some are reserved with strangers. In Fishers, where many homes have yards and trails run through town, they have room to burn off energy, but they still need daily training and company. Mixes vary, so a dog's own behavior tells you more than the label.
