The Mountain Cur came out of the Appalachian hills of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and Ohio, where pioneer families needed one dog to tree squirrels and raccoons, hold bigger game and guard the homestead. Evansville sits on the Ohio River, just across from Kentucky, so the breed's home country isn't far away. Mountain Curs are medium-sized, usually 30 to 60 pounds, with a short coat in brindle, black, yellow or blue, and many have a natural bobtail.
Many are loyal, courageous and eager to work, with strong prey drive and plenty of stamina. Some are territorial with unfamiliar dogs. They tend to do best with active adopters who offer daily exercise, consistent training and secure fencing. Dogs vary, so each one's history and personality matter more than the breed label.
