The English Bulldog, which the AKC registers simply as the Bulldog, descends from the Old English Bulldog, a fierce dog used for bull-baiting until England outlawed the sport in 1835. It was then remade into a companion with the same massive head, loose wrinkled skin, undershot jaw and low, wide body, but a much gentler disposition. Most weigh 40 to 55 pounds.
Many Bulldogs are calm, affectionate and happy with short walks and long naps, though some are stubborn. The flat face brings trade-offs: breathing trouble, heat intolerance, skin-fold infections and joint problems are common. In Evansville, that means planning for air conditioning, a lean weight and a veterinarian who knows flat-faced breeds. Dogs vary, so a Bulldog's own habits matter more than the breed's reputation.
