Terrier is a type of dog rather than a single breed. The name comes from the Latin terra, meaning earth, because these dogs were developed over several centuries to go after rats, foxes and other vermin, often by following them underground. Adoptable Terriers are frequently mixes of Jack Russell, Rat, Cairn, Schnauzer or Chihuahua lines, so a dog's size and coat can't be read from the label alone.
Most are small to medium, roughly 10 to 35 pounds, with wiry or smooth coats and a confident outlook. Many are loyal, affectionate and funny, though barking, digging and chasing small animals come with the territory. In Peoria, where bluff streets and park trails are full of squirrels and interesting smells, a secure leash and a dig-proof yard matter more than size.
