The Dalmatian is a medium-sized dog from the Dalmatia region of Croatia, known for round black or liver spots on a white coat. Puppies are born white and spot up within weeks. In England the breed worked as a coach dog, trotting beside horse-drawn carriages and guarding stables, and it later ran with fire engines, which is why Dalmatians still turn up at firehouses.
That working past explains a lot about daily life. Many Dalmatians are outgoing and devoted, though some stay reserved with strangers, and most want plenty of exercise and company. The short coat sheds heavily all year, deafness is fairly common, and every standard Dalmatian is prone to urinary stones, so water and diet matter. In Peoria, plan on long daily outings and a warm layer once the cold sets in.
