Cattle Dog is a label more than a single breed. In shelters it usually means an Australian Cattle Dog, the Blue or Red Heeler, or a mix with one, and sometimes a Texas Heeler or a cross with a Border Collie or Lab. The Australian Cattle Dog was developed in nineteenth-century Australia by crossing collie-type herders with dingoes, creating a tough drover that moves cattle by nipping at their heels.
Most are medium-sized, muscular and short-coated, with a dense double coat that sheds moderately. They're sharp, independent and often devoted to one household. In Peoria, that stamina pairs well with the Greenway and the fenced dog parks, but it needs steady outlets. Mixes vary in size, coat and energy, so a dog's behavior tells you more than its label does.
