Black Mouth Curs came out of the rural South, where farmers and hunters wanted one dog that could tree squirrels, bay hogs, move cattle and keep watch over the homestead. Whether the breed began in Tennessee or Mississippi is still debated. Most have a short yellow, red, fawn or brindle coat and the dark muzzle that gives the breed its name, and adults commonly weigh 40 to 95 pounds.
That working past shows up at home as stamina, a keen nose and strong loyalty. A cur can be gentle and devoted with its family, sensitive to harsh handling and cautious around strangers, though dogs vary. In Peoria, where winters are cold and a short coat offers little insulation, a cur does well with an active household, calm and consistent training, and a securely fenced yard.
