Labrador Retrievers descend from the St. John's water dogs of Newfoundland, which were developed in Britain as gun dogs for retrieving game from land and water. That history explains the thick otter tail, webbed toes and dense, water-resistant double coat. Labs come in black, yellow and chocolate, and field-bred dogs are often leaner and more driven than show-bred ones.
Most Labs are sociable, eager to please and strongly motivated by food, which makes training rewarding and weight gain easy. Adolescence can stay bouncy until two or three years old. In Decatur, the double coat handles cold well, but expect heavy shedding in spring and fall, muddy paws after wet weather, and a dog that wants to be part of the household.
