The Laekenois (say "LAK-in-wah") is the rarest of the four Belgian herding dogs, alongside the Malinois, Tervuren and Belgian Sheepdog. It's named for the Chateau de Laeken, a Belgian royal residence, where rough-coated shepherds tended flocks and guarded linen laid out to bleach in the fields. The American Kennel Club added it to the Herding Group in 2020.
Look for a tousled, harsh coat in fawn to reddish tones with a dark muzzle. Many Laekenois are intelligent, devoted to their families and reserved with strangers. In Chicago, that mix suits people who can give a dog daily exercise, training and real mental work, whether that's a long walk before work or scent games on a winter evening. Each dog varies, and mixes can look and act differently from the standard.
