The Hamiltonstovare is a Swedish scent hound named for Count Adolf Hamilton, founder of the Swedish Kennel Club, who showed the first examples in 1886. It was developed to trail hare and fox alone rather than in a pack, giving tongue so hunters could follow. It's a medium, athletic dog, usually 50 to 60 pounds, with a close-lying coat in black, tan and white.
Many are friendly and even-tempered with people and other dogs, but the nose leads. That means a fenced yard, a six-foot leash on walks, and recall practice that never stops, because a fresh scent can override it. The breed is rare in the US, so adopters are more likely to meet hound mixes with similar traits. Each dog differs, so judge the dog in front of you.
