Anatolian Shepherds come from the high plateau of central Turkey, where flock-guarding dogs of this type have protected sheep and goats from wolves for a very long time. They live alongside the animals and decide for themselves when to step in. Adults are big and rangy, often 80 to 150 pounds, with a short to medium fawn coat and dark mask, though many colors occur.
At home, Anatolians tend to be calm, observant and loyal, but their guarding instincts stay strong. Many are wary of strangers, protective of their territory and inclined to roam if a fence allows it. They mature slowly, think independently and respond poorly to harsh handling. Dogs vary, but adopters should be ready for careful socialization and secure fencing.
