The American Bully was developed in the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, mostly from the American Pit Bull Terrier, with American Staffordshire Terrier and bulldog breeds mixed in. Sizes range from compact Pockets to tall XLs, and many dogs are heavier than they look. The short, close coat sheds lightly to moderately.
Bullies were meant to be companions: affectionate, people-focused and often happiest leaning on someone. Their strength makes leash manners and training important, and tolerance of other dogs varies. In Des Moines, the practical questions are the city's rules for pit-bull-type dogs, a short coat in January, and keeping a muscular dog lean through long indoor months. Each Bully's own personality counts for more than its build.
