Akitas come from the snowy mountains of northern Japan, where spitz-type dogs hunted bear, boar and serow before guarding estates. The American type is heavy and bear-headed, with a broad head, small upright ears, a plush double coat and a large tail curled over the back. Males often weigh 100 to 130 pounds, and females 70 to 100.
Many Akitas are quiet, dignified and devoted to their own people while staying aloof with strangers. Many don't tolerate other dogs, especially of the same sex. In Des Moines that points to a calm home, patient reward-based training and slow introductions. Expect heavy shedding, with a coat blowout twice a year that fills a vacuum fast. Akitas vary, so judge each dog by how it behaves, not by the breed label.
