The Hamiltonstovare takes its name from Count Adolf Hamilton, who showed the first examples in Sweden in 1886. Developed to trail hare and fox on its own, it announces the trail with its voice. It's a handsome, athletic hound of roughly 50 to 60 pounds, with a harsh, close-lying coat in black, tan and white. That short coat copes easily with Honolulu's warmth.
Many are friendly, even-tempered and good with other dogs, but the nose leads, and a fresh scent can override recall in seconds. With dogs allowed only in designated City parks, secure fencing and leashed outings are the norm here. The breed is rare outside Scandinavia, so watch the listings on this page and look at similar hound breeds too.
