The Appenzeller Sennenhund comes from the Appenzell region of northeastern Switzerland, where it drove cattle, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. It's a medium, muscular dog, usually 48 to 70 pounds, with a short, dense tricolor coat of black or brown with white and rust markings and a tail curled over its back.
Appenzellers are lively, watchful and often reserved with strangers. Bred to work all day, they tend to need daily exercise, training and something to think about. The dense double coat sheds moderately and was built for Alpine pastures, so managing warmth matters more than grooming in Honolulu. The breed is uncommon in the US, and dogs vary, so each one's energy and noise level will differ.
