The Affenpinscher began as a working ratter in German stables, kitchens and granaries, and its name means monkey terrier. Adults are usually under 12 pounds, with a harsh, shaggy coat that forms a mane around the head and shoulders. Black is the most common color, though gray, silver and red also occur.
Affenpinschers tend to be confident, curious and loyal, with a comical seriousness that makes them entertaining company. They're alert and sometimes bossy with larger dogs, which is worth remembering at busy Honolulu dog parks. Many do best with adults or families with older children, and housetraining can take patience. As with any breed, each dog's personality and needs vary.
