The Scottish Deerhound is a rough-coated sighthound from the Scottish Highlands, bred to course red deer. It stands roughly 28 to 32 inches tall and weighs 75 to 110 pounds, with a harsh, wiry coat in blue-gray, gray, brindle or fawn. Shedding is low to moderate, and weekly brushing usually keeps the coat tidy.
Many Deerhounds are gentle and quiet at home, and they tend to bond closely with their families. They're sensitive, so calm, reward-based training works better than harsh corrections. Prey drive is real, and small animals can set off a sprint. Living with one in Marietta means planning for secure fencing, leashed outings and a bed big enough for a long dog. Lifespans run about 8 to 11 years, and heart disease and cancer are the main concerns.
