The Wire Fox Terrier was developed in England to bolt foxes from their dens, and it still carries a working terrier's drive in a compact body of about 15 to 19 pounds. The dense, wiry coat is mostly white with black or tan markings, framed by a bearded muzzle and small folded ears. Wires have won more Westminster Best in Show titles than any other breed.
At home, many are bright, funny and tireless, with a strong urge to chase, dig and investigate. They bond closely with their families but think for themselves, so training takes patience and short, rewarding sessions. In Lawrenceville, plan for vigorous daily exercise, secure fencing and regular coat care, either hand-stripping or clipping, and remember that each dog's personality varies.
