"Foxhound" covers two breeds. The American Foxhound is the lighter, rangier hound developed in colonial Maryland and Virginia, and the English Foxhound is the heavier-boned dog from British hunts. Both have a short, hard coat, long ears and a deep chest, and most stand 21 to 25 inches tall, weigh 55 to 75 pounds and live 10 to 13 years.
Bred to work in packs, Foxhounds are usually sweet, sociable and easygoing. They're also independent, led by their noses, and known for a loud, musical bay. Many hounds in the Southeast come from hunting packs and may never have lived indoors, so house training and patience come first. Dogs vary, and a hound's personality will tell you more than its breed.
