Belgian Shepherds are one breed in four coat types: the long black Groenendael (the Belgian Sheepdog to the AKC), the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the wiry Laekenois. They were sorted out of Belgium's farm herding dogs in the 1890s, and they stand square and elegant at 22 to 26 inches, usually 40 to 75 pounds.
Many are intense, watchful and devoted to their people, with a drive that made them police and military dogs. A dog labeled Belgian Shepherd in Atlanta may well be a Malinois or a mix, so expect a dog that wants daily work, training and company. Coat length varies, and so does how much hair ends up on your floor.
