The Affenpinscher began in Germany as a stable and kitchen ratter, and its name means monkey-like terrier, a nod to the bearded, wide-eyed face. It's a sturdy toy dog, usually 7 to 12 pounds, with a harsh, wiry coat that forms a mane around the head and shoulders. Black is the most familiar color, though gray, silver and red also occur.
That working past shows in the personality. Many Affenpinschers are confident, curious and a little bossy, with plenty of nerve for their size. In Atlanta, that might mean trotting happily along a leashed stretch of the BeltLine, then guarding a Midtown condo from every elevator chime. They're loyal and playful with their people, though they may not enjoy rough handling from young children, and housetraining can take patience.
