The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is the smallest of Switzerland's four tricolored Sennenhund breeds, named for the Entlebuch valley near Lucerne. Farmers used these compact, muscular drovers to move cows between Alpine pastures and to keep watch over the farm. The breed nearly vanished in the early twentieth century and was rebuilt from a handful of dogs, joining the AKC Herding Group in 2011. Expect a short, hard, shiny double coat in black with tan and white markings.
Entles tend to bond intensely with their families and stay reserved with strangers. Most remain lively and driven well into adulthood, and the breed standard itself warns that they are not dogs for a casual owner. People who enjoy training, dog sports, hiking or simply giving a clever dog a daily job often find them cheerful, loyal and endlessly game partners.
