The Weimaraner was developed in nineteenth-century Germany around the city of Weimar as a versatile hunting dog that could track, point and retrieve. Its short, sleek coat runs from mouse-gray to silver-gray, and light amber or blue-gray eyes earned it the nickname Gray Ghost. Adults stand roughly 23 to 27 inches tall and weigh 55 to 90 pounds, with a lean, athletic build.
Weimaraners bond closely with their people and often want to share the same room, car and couch. That devotion can turn into anxiety or chewing when a dog is left alone too long or under-exercised. The coat is easy to care for and sheds moderately, so the real work is exercise, training and company. Dogs vary, so spend time getting to know any Weim you meet.
