The Shar-Pei comes from southern China, where it guarded homes and farms. The breed nearly disappeared in the twentieth century before dedicated fans revived it, and the AKC recognized it as the Chinese Shar-Pei in 1992. Its look is unmistakable: deep wrinkles, a broad, padded muzzle, small folded ears, a blue-black tongue and a harsh, short coat. Most adults weigh 45 to 60 pounds.
The personality is dignified, independent and devoted to family, with a wary streak toward strangers. In a humid place like Tampa, the care side matters as much as the character: skin folds, ears and eyes need regular attention, and a vet who knows the breed is a real asset. Each Shar-Pei differs, so spend time with the dog before deciding.
