The Great Pyrenees is a livestock guardian from the mountains between France and Spain, bred to stay with flocks and face down wolves and bears with little direction from people. That history shows in a giant white dog, typically 85 to 120 pounds, with a thick double coat, dark almond eyes and double dewclaws on the hind legs.
In Tampa, the same traits shape daily life. A Pyr is usually gentle and devoted at home but independent, so recall is unreliable and a leash is the safe default on city streets and in parks. Nighttime barking is common, which matters in close-quarters housing. The coat sheds heavily all year, and keeping the dog cool matters more than any grooming trick. Pyrs vary, so each dog's own personality counts for more than the breed label.
