The Collie grew out of Scottish sheep-herding dogs and was refined in Victorian Britain into the elegant dog most Americans know from Lassie. The breed comes in two varieties: the Rough Collie, with a flowing mane and frill, and the Smooth Collie, with a short, dense coat. Both have a double coat and a long, wedge-shaped head with expressive eyes.
Many Collies are gentle, sensitive and closely tuned to their families, and they have a long reputation as patient companions for children. Herding instincts can show up as barking, circling or nudging at running kids. In Tampa, expect heavy seasonal shedding, regular brushing, daily exercise in the cooler hours and a vet who knows about the MDR1 drug sensitivity common in the breed. Dogs vary, so judge each Collie on its own personality.
