The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was developed around Maryland's Chesapeake Bay to retrieve ducks from cold, rough water. Its short, wavy double coat carries a natural oil that sheds water, and its brown, sedge or deadgrass color blends into marsh. Chessies are powerful and broad-chested, with webbed feet and yellow or amber eyes.
Compared with Labs and Goldens, Chessies tend to be more serious and independent, and many are protective of their family and reserved with strangers. They do best with confident owners who enjoy training and can offer daily exercise, ideally with a chance to retrieve. Dogs vary, so a Chessie's history and socialization matter as much as the breed. In Tampa, that coat and that drive mean planning around heat, humidity and where swimming is safe.
