The Beauceron is France's largest native herding dog, developed around Chartres to move and guard big flocks over long distances. Its short, weatherproof double coat comes in black and tan or harlequin, and the tan leg markings earned it the nickname red stockings. Double dewclaws on each hind leg are a breed hallmark, and Beaucerons also served as messenger and sentry dogs in both world wars.
Beaucerons are typically intelligent, confident and loyal to their family, yet reserved with strangers. They mature slowly, often not settling until about age three, and they respond best to calm, consistent training rather than harsh correction. Expect a heavy seasonal shed, daily exercise and ongoing socialization. Dogs vary, so a Beauceron's own manner matters more than the breed description.
