A yellow Lab is a Labrador Retriever in one of the breed's three recognized colors, ranging from pale cream to deep fox red. The breed descends from the water dogs of Newfoundland and was refined in Britain as a gun dog, which explains the dense double coat, the otter tail and the constant urge to carry things.
In Sarasota, that retrieving drive needs a safe outlet. Alligators live in local ponds and lakes, so a water-loving Lab needs close watching near the water's edge. Labs also gain weight easily and shed heavily, so measured meals and regular brushing are part of the deal. Dogs vary, and a dog's own energy and manners say more than its color.
