A chocolate Lab is a Labrador Retriever in the breed's brown coat, one of three colors the breed standard accepts. Labs descend from Newfoundland water dogs and were developed in Britain as gun dogs, which explains the dense, water-shedding double coat, the otter tail and the love of swimming. Adults typically weigh 55 to 80 pounds and are sturdy, athletic dogs.
That water heritage fits Pensacola's bayous and bay shores, but the coat sheds year-round and more heavily by season, and damp ears in humid air can invite infection. A large UK study found chocolates had more ear and skin problems and shorter lives on average. Color doesn't set personality, and each dog differs.
