Border Terriers come from the Cheviot Hills along the English and Scottish border, where farmers and hunters needed a small, tough terrier with legs long enough to keep up with horses and a body narrow enough to follow a fox underground. The otter-shaped head and harsh, wiry coat, in red, wheaten, grizzle and tan, or blue and tan, are the breed's hallmarks.
Many Borders are cheerful and affectionate, and often less quarrelsome than other terriers, but the urge to chase and dig stays. In Orlando, that means a secure yard or a good leash around the small critters that live in every neighborhood. At 11 to 16 pounds, they're easy to manage in most homes. The coat sheds lightly to moderately and needs hand stripping a few times a year, and many Borders live well into their teens.
