The Redbone Coonhound is a solid-red scent hound developed in the American South, descended from red foxhounds that Scottish immigrants brought to Georgia and later crossed with other hound lines. Hunters used Redbones to trail raccoons at night and hold them in trees. The United Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1902, and the AKC followed in 2009. Adults stand roughly 21 to 27 inches tall and weigh about 45 to 70 pounds, with a short, smooth coat.
At home, many Redbones are mellow, sociable and affectionate, happy to nap after a long outing. On a scent they turn single-minded and loud. In Ocala, that means a securely fenced yard, a leash on every walk and a plan for a booming bay. Dogs vary, so spend time with the one you're considering.
