The Australian Kelpie is a lean, prick-eared herding dog developed in the 1870s from Scottish working collies to move Merino sheep across big, hot stations. Kelpies are famous for running across the backs of sheep, and their stamina and toughness made them Australia's signature stock dog. In the US they are still uncommon, mostly seen as ranch and sport dogs.
Many Kelpies are alert, quick to learn and loyal, and usually a bit reserved with strangers. The same drive that makes them great workers can lead to heel nipping, bike chasing, barking or invented projects when they're bored. Working-line and show-line dogs differ, and each dog has its own personality, so adopters who enjoy daily running, training and dog sports tend to do best. In Ocala, that could mean regular trail time and a fenced, shaded yard.
