Labrador Retrievers descend from the St. John's water dogs of Newfoundland, which were brought to Britain in the 1800s and shaped into gun dogs that retrieve from land and water. The thick otter tail, dense water-resistant double coat and webbed feet all come from that job. Labs come in black, yellow and chocolate, and field-bred dogs tend to be leaner and higher-drive than show-bred ones.
In Naples, that heritage means a water-loving dog living among canals, bays and lakes that aren't safe for swimming. Most Labs are friendly and eager to please, and they love food, balls and company. Expect heavy seasonal shedding, daily exercise, careful portion control and a long, bouncy adolescence that can last until two or three years old.
