Pit Bull Terrier is more a type than a single breed. The label usually covers the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bullies and many mixes with broad heads and muscular builds. All trace back to nineteenth-century British bull-and-terrier dogs, and DNA tests often disagree with the breed label a dog was given.
Most are medium-sized, short-coated and athletic, usually 30 to 65 pounds, and many are affectionate and eager to please. Their strength makes training and good management important, and some are selective about other dogs. In Lakeland, that means a sturdy leash, a secure yard if you have one, and plenty of shade and water. Because behavior varies from dog to dog, a dog's own personality tells you more than its label.
