The Mountain Cur came out of the Appalachian hills of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and Ohio, where pioneer families needed one dog to tree squirrels and raccoons, hold larger game and guard the homestead. The result is a stocky, short-coated dog, usually 30 to 60 pounds, often brindle, black, yellow or blue, and many have a natural bobtail.
Many Mountain Curs are loyal, courageous and driven, with plenty of stamina and a strong prey instinct. Some are territorial with unfamiliar dogs, and small animals may look like game. They tend to do best with active owners who offer daily exercise, consistent training and secure fencing. In Lakeland, that also means planning around heat and a yard that keeps a determined dog in. Dogs vary, so spend time with a Cur before deciding.
