American Staffordshire Terriers descend from bull-and-terrier dogs brought from Britain in the 1800s, and the American Kennel Club recognized them in 1936 as the Staffordshire Terrier. They're stocky, muscular, medium-sized dogs, usually 40 to 70 pounds, with a broad head, pronounced cheeks and a short, glossy coat in nearly any color.
AmStaffs are confident, playful and devoted to their families, and many love leaning on or climbing onto a favorite person. They're strong, so leash manners matter on busy Riverside sidewalks, and some dislike other dogs even when well socialized, so careful introductions help. Because the breed is often grouped with pit bull types, it's worth checking lease and insurance terms before adopting. The short coat is easy to care for.
