The Great Pyrenees began as a livestock guardian in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain, where big white dogs stayed with flocks and held off wolves and bears. Adults weigh roughly 85 to 120 pounds and stand 25 to 32 inches tall. The thick double coat is white, sometimes with gray, tan or badger markings, and each hind leg carries double dewclaws.
That guarding past explains a lot about Pyrs at home. Many are gentle and devoted, but they think for themselves, may ignore commands, and tend to bark at night and wander if a fence has gaps. In Gainesville, plan on sturdy fencing, regular brushing, heavy shedding and a cool spot indoors through the long humid season. Dogs vary, so a Pyr's own personality matters most.
