Fishermen along Portugal's Algarve coast once relied on the Portuguese Water Dog to herd fish toward nets, dive for lost tackle and carry messages between boats. The breed nearly vanished as fishing modernized, and was preserved from the 1930s onward from a small number of dogs. Today's Portie is a sturdy, medium-sized working dog with a broad head, webbed feet, a rudder-like tail and a single coat of tight curls or soft waves that grows continuously and sheds little.
Many Porties are bright, affectionate and tireless, with a strong love of water and of being involved in whatever their family is doing. That intelligence cuts both ways: an under-exercised or bored dog may chew, mouth hands or invent its own jobs. Adopters should plan for daily vigorous activity, training, and professional grooming every couple of months.
